Spell-check for error-free copy.Wouldn't it have been great to win the 5th grade spelling bee? Unfortunately, most of us didn't, and certain words can cause us grief to this day. This article may help those who have struggled in those pressure-filled competitions and in the years since. Major software companies have given the spelling-challenged a useful gift within their page layout applications. The spell-check feature is an under-utilized tool that can save time and money with little effort. While there is no substitute for careful proofreading by humans, spell-checking catches common errors quickly. Grammar, punctuation, proper nouns, numbers, URLs, acronyms, uncommon words, etc. must be proofed separately with a critical eye, but the first line of defense is right in the program. |

The major page layout programs used at C-K Graphics and other printers include PageMaker, QuarkXpress, Illustrator, and FreeHand. Each of these applications features a spell-check tool that is easy to learn and use. Your owner's manual can show you how, or go to the help menu and type in the word "spell". Most applications allow you to add words to your spelling dictionary, including proper nouns, assuring greater occurrence of error-free copy. Take a few minutes to learn to use this valuable aid. It can mean the difference between running a job correctly the first time, and re-running it at the customer's expense due to an avoidable spelling error. You'll appreciate the extra help this feature affords.
